The goal for GarlicLady.com is to make it the definitive online destination for information, advice and healthy recipes about garlic, olives, vegetables and natural beverages.
Hi, my name is Lumchuan Burright, but to keep things simple, please feel free to call me The Garlic Lady.
I grew up in the tropical environment of Thailand where everywhere you look people are preparing food and delicious meals with vegetables, exotic fruits, and tasty spices and herbs.
My passion for using healthy ingredients for great diet comes from my family, particulary my grandfather.
He taught me the advantages of using garlic, vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices in our diet for medicinal and culinary purposes.
My mother-in-law, Darlene (The Garlic Grandma) has played a huge role in teaching me how to develop recipes and to pickle in a way that Americans and Europeans appreciate. She is a 70+ year old farm girl that grew up in a family that literally lived off of the land.
Darlene learned from her mother who was an excellent German cook that fed a large family and farm hands. Since refrigeration was limited she used pickling to preserve vegetables, fruit, fish, pork, beef, chicken and wild meat.
She learned about gardening, hunting and fishing from her father, a Swedish American that was a farmer in eastern Oregon.
Wow, it is hard to believe that I now have over 35 years culinary experience in Thai, American, Indian and Italian cuisine. I have to admit I have noticed my friends getting older. I love cooking and spend almost as much time in the kitchen as I do in my garlic garden and vegetable garden.
The Role of Family Heritage on My Culinary & Naturopathic Background
Growing up on the farm
I grew up on a small farm in the 1950's northwest of Bangkok, Thailand. I met an American Air Force boy serving in Vietnam in 1969 and in 1970 found myself married and living in the United States. Wow, how did that happen?
Growing up my grandfather took care of me and my brothers and sisters while the rest of the family worked in the fields and orchards during the day. He was a wise man who had an incredible knowledge of farming vegetables, herbs, spices and fruit. His special passion was garlic. Planting garlic, garlic seed, garlic plants and growing garlic was very important to him.
My farm education
Grandfather taught me how to raise, harvest, store, pickle, dry, and cook what came from our garden, orchard, and the jungle in fantastic recipes that have been handed down for generations from family members. Almost every recipe features garlic.
Using food as our medicine
He also had a unique understanding on how to use these same ingredients that we raised in our garden, orchard and foraged from the jungle to prevent and cure disease.
Traditional folk use of garlic and other herbal remedies is familiar to most of us in one form or another. This is the way that garlic and herbal usage has passed from generation to generation. It is my view that folk medicinal wisdom is of great value when coupled with western medicine.
Garlic was his featured natural preventative health item in his garlic garden. Garlic was his favorite medicinal item. Garlic and blood pressure. Cholesterol and garlic. Regulating blood sugar, treating blood clots, and much more.
As I have grown older I have really began to realize the importance of generations of my family's experience with medicinal folklore.
Quality, Fresh, Healthy Food Tastes Better
Grandfather also taught me that healthy food and beverages typically taste better than unhealthy food if prepared properly. He was so very right. He motivated me at a very young age to be the best cook I could be as well as being responsible for using healthy, high quality ingredients that are good for each of us.
My Garlic Recipes
My recipe section will assist you in preparing mouth watering healthy meals for you, your family and friends. I feature garlic in almost every recipe just as my grandfather taught me.
I believe that the ideal food provides good taste, good health, and a combination of flavors. Flavors should be neutral, sweet, hot and sour. Sometimes several of these flavors are present in a single creation, subtly blending, while in other instances one flavor predominates.
